What Does It Really Mean to Escape the Rat Race?

Is escaping the rat race simply about making enough passive income to stop working?

Robert Kiyosaki, author of Rich Dad Poor Dad, is widely associated with the idea of escaping the rat race by building passive income that exceeds your expenses. The underlying principle is that, rather than continually exchanging your time for money, you build assets that generate income for you.

For people pursuing financial independence, this can be a useful way of thinking. Financial security can create choices, reduce dependence on employment and give people greater control over their time.

But I believe the definition of escaping the rat race needs to go further.

Not everyone is running the same race

During nearly 20 years as a taxi driver, I have had conversations with close to 300,000 people from different backgrounds, professions and walks of life.

One thing those conversations taught me is that people are motivated by different things.

Some people want to build businesses and achieve financial independence. Others genuinely love their jobs and would continue doing them even if they never needed the money. Some want more time with their families. Others want to create, teach, serve their communities, explore the world or simply live with less pressure.

Imagine asking someone:

If you won millions on the lottery tomorrow, would you still do what you do today?

Some people would immediately leave their jobs. Others would carry on because their work gives them purpose, satisfaction, identity or a sense of contribution.

Neither answer is necessarily wrong.

The important question is whether the life someone is living reflects their own values and choices, or whether they feel trapped in a life they never consciously chose.

Financial freedom and personal freedom are connected, but they aren't identical

Money matters. It can provide security, options and independence. Having insufficient money can impose genuine limitations on people's choices, and we shouldn't pretend otherwise.

However, financial independence does not automatically guarantee a meaningful life. Equally, a person does not necessarily need to become wealthy, own multiple businesses or generate passive income to live meaningfully.

A person who loves teaching, nursing, making music, raising a family or working with their hands may already have something valuable in their life that cannot be measured by their income alone.

The challenge is not simply to stop working. It is to question why we work, what we are working towards and what we may be sacrificing along the way.

We should also recognise that not everyone has the same opportunities. Building assets and passive income can require money, time, knowledge and circumstances that some people do not have. A broader understanding of freedom must acknowledge those realities rather than imply that everyone can escape financial pressure by following the same formula.

The Get Out Rat Race perspective

At Get Out Rat Race, we see financial independence as one possible route towards greater freedom, but not the only one.

For us, escaping the rat race means examining the assumptions that shape our lives: what success means, what we believe we should pursue, how we spend our time and whether our daily choices reflect what genuinely matters to us.

It means recognising that we can become trapped not only by financial circumstances, but also by expectations, comparison, fear, status and the belief that we must continually achieve more to be worth more.

Our aim is not to persuade everyone to quit their jobs or become entrepreneurs. It is to encourage people to think more deeply about the lives they are building.

The rat race ends not simply when your passive income exceeds your active income, but when you regain the freedom to live in alignment with your values, pursue meaningful work and become who you were born to be.

That freedom will look different for different people.

For one person, it may mean financial independence. For another, it may mean changing careers, starting a business, spending more time with family, developing a talent or learning to appreciate a life they already love.

The question isn't whether we're all running the same race.

It's whether we've stopped to ask ourselves if we're running the right one.

Self-Actualization: Your Path to Freedom

Get Out Rat Race is built on the foundation of self-actualization, a concept coined by Abraham Maslow. While most people know him for the hierarchy of needs, we focus on helping you reach the pinnacle of that pyramid—the place where your true potential unfolds.

Here, we dive into escaping the rat race, exploring quantum ideas, and turning passions into purpose. At the heart of it all is the spark inside you—your unique value and creative energy. When nurtured, this spark can transform your life and the world around you.

Most people are trapped in cycles that don't serve their higher purpose. But here's the truth: it's not all about making money. It's about finding that divine spark within us all—that unique gift that lights us up from within and makes us come alive.

Whether you're curious, seeking truth, or ready to start your journey of transformation, join us to explore, create, and grow—bringing your potential to life while doing work you love.

A Journey Beyond the Rat Race

For many people, the journey begins with a simple question:

"Is this really what life is about?"

Perhaps it begins with burnout. Or anxiety. Or the feeling that, despite doing everything society says should lead to happiness, something is still missing.

That feeling is often described as the rat race. It is a useful place to begin. But it is not where the journey ends.

As this project evolved, one thing became increasingly clear.

The rat race is not the root problem. It is a symptom of something deeper.

It reflects the way many of us have learned to think about ourselves, success, work, education, technology, and even one another.

Escaping the rat race is therefore not simply about changing careers, earning more money, or achieving financial independence. It is about changing the way we see ourselves and the world.

That journey naturally led to four deeper questions.

Who are we?
Why does humanity need a new way of thinking?
What principles should guide us as we search for better answers?
How might those principles be applied to the systems that shape our lives?

Those questions became the foundation of this project.

Each document explores one part of that journey. Together they form a living philosophy — one that seeks to unite insights from science, psychology, philosophy, spirituality, systems thinking, and lived experience while remaining grounded in intellectual humility.

They are not intended to provide every answer. They are an invitation to explore better questions.
