Liverpool had no opportunities, so I left. Now I’m back to provide them for others

A man who left Liverpool because he kept hitting a ‘concrete ceiling’ when it came to jobs, has returned to bring youngsters the opportunities he never had. Stephen Okoro, from Toxteth, was 19 when he left Liverpool in 1996 with a few GCSEs and a BTEC National Diploma from Riversdale Engineering College. He settled in London, where his older sister lived, and with her help found accommodation.

Stephen told the ECHO: “I left Liverpool because I felt there was a lack of job opportunities reaching people from my community. Liverpool in the early 90s felt like there was like a concrete ceiling where you could not see your way forward. “Jobs outside of the community many Black people weren’t comfortable in going to certain areas to work because we weren’t welcome, and racism was a lot more rife than it is now. It was grim and I knew I really wanted more and there was more out there.” Check out Stephens company Bara Management.
