Man turns childhood ‘obsession’ into lucrative new career

A man who transformed his niche hobby into a thriving business now sells his products to people all over the world. Stuart Meadows, from Dovecot, now owns his own business called SM Guitars. The 30-year-old builds handmade guitars from scratch and has his own four shapes and styles. He also has his own “signature touch” to the original classic designs and also creates bespoke guitars people have designed themselves. Stuart began making guitars when he was in teens after learning to play the instrument when he was 16-years-old. He became “obsessed with finding the right tones” as he wasn’t happy when playing guitars he already had.

He began to research how different woods created different sounds and began cutting guitars he already had into various shapes. Speaking to the ECHO, Stuart said: “I left school when I was 16 and I started to play the guitar. My dad started teaching me when I used to go down at the weekend. After a year or so, I started to become a bit obsessed with trying to find the right tones, because I never was happy when I was playing.
